On moving to another country?

I live in a 3rd world country (Philippines). I don't see a good future for me if I remain here. So I've decided to pack my stuff and go to Singapore to see if I can make a go of it there (well I won't be leaving Sg and make sure I get a job). I am going there legally (thank God I've this certificate that will enable me to prolong my stay for a yr 'til I find employment). Right now, I'm selling everything I own. All I will be taking with me is a suitcase filled with clothes. I don't know anyone in Singapore. I am going to stay in a hostel while job hunting and looking for a room to rent (a more permanent place to stay). Any tips or advises for me?

Answer:
I didn't move to another country, I stayed in Canada but moved from one province to another which was a 3 days journey. I hadn't been here previously but sold the house, sold what belongings I could and took the rest and it has been the best experience. I am on a leave of absence from my job back home (just in case things didn't work out for me here) and while I did buy a house here, I'm still having a hard time finding a job. It hasn't been all that easy. I did the opposite from you, I moved from a place where there are more opportunities but it was more expensive to live to less opportunities but housing is cheaper but I love it here and I'm so much happier here than where I was.

The one thing that really helped me was becoming good friends with the man who I bought my house from. Even though I'm still in Canada, the way of life is so much different than what I was used to and he has been a tremendous help with getting me through, showing me the ins and outs, where things are, etc. If you can find just one person who will be willing do the same for you it will really make the transition smoother. Also, try and learn as much as you can on your own about Singapore. The more you know before hand the less of a shock it will be for you.

I wish you all the luck! It will be tough at times but once you get settled and more familiar with your new surroundings and begin to meet people it will get easier. It will just take time. I've been here now 7 months and just starting to meet friends other than my boyfriend (yes, the man I bought my house from). Of course I have met people but not many that I can call a friend.
A lot of Polish people arrive like that over here. They end up living under a bridge.

I would say that you are going rather fast. Its always better to have backup. try not to leave your house and belongings right now.
Have some friend take care of 'em. Who knows you might land up in a worse place.
So just sell 'em when you are ready and have a good job etc.
You are going to be just fine.your English is aw sum! You sound like a real go getter..I'm sure you will find everything you are looking for..Good Luck and God bless!
