Arachnaphobia Information?
I wanted to read up on info about arachnaphobia, but I was too afraid to open a webpage about it because I'm too afraid that a picture of a spider or something will be shown on it- don't laugh!
Could someone please give me information about Arachnaphobia in particular. Please do NOT provide links- I won't read them- but if you could copy & paste the info there into your answer, that would be GREAT! Thanks!
Answer:
First of all being afraid of spiders from an evolutionary stand point made sense. In the days of primitive man, avoidance of poisonous or dangerous animals allowed humans to live and reproduced. Humans that were attracted to spiders had an early death.
To get better with spiders there are a few angles to try.
1. Work on progressively exposing yourself to spiders. Take small steps, do not overwhelm yourself, but give your small doses of spiders. It can start with fake spiders or watching movies and moving up to the real thing at a distance and working towards getting closer.
2. Change how you think about spiders. You may be thinking that spiders are a threat and you don't feel safe around them. Try watching a spider spin its web. Take time out to see how beautiful a spider could be in its art of web spinning and you may see spiders in a different light.
3. Learn as much as you can about spiders. Rather then avoiding the thought, research it as much as possible. Learn as much as you can about spiders, the types of spiders, the genus and species of different spiders. This will allow you to view spiders more realistically and factually rather then allowing your anxiety to distort your thinking around spiders.
4. Work on managing your panic. Anxiety is about a cycle of your mind seeing something that triggers it. Your brain then tells your body something is wrong. Your body reacts by increased heart rate and other parasympathetic (flight or fight) nervous system response. This response then tells your brain that something is wrong which makes you panic in your mind. This panic then returns to your body and escalates this cycle till we are stricken with panic.
Learning how to manage this with breathing and relaxation will allow you manage this phobia and your overall anxiety more effectively.
I wish I could help you, because then I could help myself! I am as bad as you are, if not worse. I almost got run over by a car because there was a spider in my car that I could not reach so I parked on the shoulder of a 65 mph thruway and jumped out of the car------just before I jumped out of my car I opened my door and another car hit it and ripped it off of my car-------all I was worried about was where the spider was
You know, I can really relate to what you are talking about. I've hurt myself getting away from spiders. After a few years I learned to just ignore them if they weren't actually on me. Then I was ignoring them and one day I looked down and recognized a brown recluse. I had seen them at the Smithsonian very safely in a glass cage, so I was very sure of what I was looking at. Turns out the house was completely infested with them. I called an exterminator and gradually he got rid of most of them over several months, and my husband and I both got bitten several times over that period and learned that neither of us is senstive to them. All in all, what I'm trying to tell you is, try to settle yourself down and don't classify yourself as arachnophobic. Yes, I utterly despise those things and can understand how you feel, but working yourself into a frenzy and feeding the frenzy is not going to make it any better.
you mean those cute little crawling guy,s...just think how they feel about you...a towering giant.perhaps, a million time,s their own weight..able to snuff their life with a simple motion...their more afraid of you than you are of them...they only bite to protect themselve,s...most time,s they,ll only bite when frightened or aggitated..I really don,t care much for them either..but if they stay in the garden&eat all the fly,s.I,m all for that!

Best is to face your fears ...!!
Most phobias are treated as a group rather than one type or another...see a therapist to help you with this if you feel so anxious it's not good...spiders are scary looking but they are innocent creatures.they hunt for food or to protect their young or themselves ..the only creature with the capacity for evil is man...
Phobias: Children,adolescents and adults with phobias have unrealistic and excessive fears of certain situations or objects. Many phobias have specific names, and the disorder usually centers on animals, storms, water, heights, or situations, such as being in an enclosed space. Children, adolescents and adults with social phobias are terrified of being criticized or judged harshly by others. Young people with phobias will try to avoid the objects and situations they fear, so the disorder can greatly restrict their lives.
Cognitive-behavioral treatment, in which young people learn to deal with fears by modifying the ways they think and behave;
Relaxation techniques;
Biofeedback (to control stress and muscle tension);
Family therapy;
Parent training; and
Medication.
While cognitive-behavioral approaches are effective in treating some anxiety disorders, medications work well with others. Some people with anxiety disorders benefit from a combination of these treatments. More research is needed to determine what treatments work best for the various types of anxiety disorders.

It's all in the mind. You know that don't you? So, work on that. You could probably do with professional help or hypnosis as it is difficult to overcome by yourself. Your GP can refer you to the appropriate help.
