My answer would be they shouldn't.
What I have noticed through the years is teenagers think they have all the answers so they don't listen and learn from others, especially their parents. As people get older (not all but hopefully most), people find out as they mature that they don't have all the answers so they watch others and listen to others and learn from what they do or say.
Life should always be a learning experience no matter how old we get. Difference is older people are more mature and will listen more than the younger people will most of the time.
The wiser ones will learn from others' experiences as well as their own... Even wiser ones will study the only book on earth claiming divine inspiration and apply its principles in their daily activities and learn a great deal. Every thing in life is a learning experience... Some of us just stay longer on the same lessons but until they realize it, and learn and graduate from that lesson, they are doomed to repeat the same errors over and over on account of it.
