The "Wild West" was first used on the covers of the Dime Novels of the 1880's an effort to create a sense of excitement and adventure to attract readers.
The Wild Wild West was also an pretty good television show back in the 1960's. (The movie with Will Smith didn't to it justice.)
The lack of established law enforcement in the territories.
