Is fear unnecessary?

Answer:
No. Sometimes, its a sign that you care for something/someone. Fear is not unnecessary because fear also makes you strong ang humble. What's wrong with fear is when it becomes excessive, that sometimes it's like hallucinating.
I think you need to define your question more narrowly. Fear is what keeps us alive. It is the fear of burning that keeps us from standing in a fire pit. Fear is what keeps us from driving too fast, eating raw pork, etc. Fear is a basic self defense mechanism all creatures posses.

What is unnecessary is the irrational fears we all carry around with us. Fear of not being liked. Fear of wearing last years fashions. These are the fears that make our lives so much harder than they otherwise would be.
Without fear, there would be nothing to overcome or to be scared of. If no one had any fear, it would be like people wouldnt survive very long lol; walking in traffic and skydiving and trying to ride a crocodile. Fear is supposed to 'promote survival'. If no one had fear would that make every one courageous?

Uh I dont know what Im talking about... Here was another question about if fear was necessary .
Someone is fear because either he/she did something wrong or against the law, rules and order.. Fear is not included in unnecessary or necessary. There are two categories of fear, fear come before we do something and fear come after we did something. Fear come after is too late to solve and fear come before that has give us a plenty of time to overcome problems arise from that. Sometime fear is good because its give early sign to us to prepare ourself from something bad happen to us.. For my opinion this fear is necessary rather then fear come after we did something. Its like, ' we must prepare an umbrella before raining'...
Fear is one of our most primitive and deep-rooted emotions. Its range and the havoc it often plays with our lives are enormous - a fear of old age perhaps, or fear of sickness and death; fear of not being liked, appreciated or well-regarded; fear of being attacked, whether physical or emotional; fear of losing possessions, loved ones, our own faculties.
Fear points to the inescapable fragility and precariousness of life.
Of course, fear is not seen as something that is always something bad. Think about the idea of karma. The things that we do that are bad or good will eventually reap consequences. We know that if we intentionally do something wrong, we are inevitably storing up trouble for ourselves in the future.
This kind of fear - of the moral consequences of our actions - helps keep us on the right track.

At the root of fear are a number of factors that are essential features of Buddhist teaching:
Four Noble Truths:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/four_noble_...

In practicing mindfulness of the body, 'one becomes a conqueror of of fear and dread, and fear and dread do not conquer oneself; one abides overcoming fear and dread whenever they arise'.
We need fear because it is a defense mechanism. If we were not afraid of anything we would not live very long. Research proves that if we lack the chemicals in our brain which enable us to fear, we will not live very long at all. These tests have been carried out with laboratory rats and proven to be true over and over again. David.
