How to avoid unnecessary internet browsing at work?
Hi,
I work in the area of informatics research. i sit infront of computer almost 9 hrs a day. Usually, i browse internet and my favorite sites are wikipedia, rail fanning and news blogs. I feel that at work I am distracting myself with this uncessary browsing. how can i stop myself with this chain browsing on wikipedia and other news blogs. i just want to focus on my work. I might be going to these sites because, i am bored of what i am doing at that particular time. any suggestions. thanks

If I was you, I would set limits; not on surfing the net but on completing work. I would say, for example, I have 10 projects to complete today if I finish 8 then I can use the net for one hour.
No guilt, no worry...I finish 8, I look and feel very productive, I enjoy my hour and when the hour is off...I stop.
I go back and finish those 2 projects and when the work is done, then I can have all the internet I want and still be happy at work, productive and no one can complain.

Close all your internet browsers and don't use them unless it's for something work related.
you could employ a limiting blocker which would only allow you to use certain sites like your companies internals.
Tell your boss and he/she will help you.

sometimes we get mind blocks that act as boredom... information research... looks like wikipedia could be part of your work... other than that I'm not sure what exactly you do... but try working on several projects at a time. lets say you research topics... chose about 5 topics to work on.. when you get blocked or bored of one.. shift to the next... keep switching... make the topics diverse enough that you recognize the change.. and jump from one job to the other you get variety and the work done.
don't stop- it's fun! But you could spend some more time outside in the fresh air. Try hiking instead of browsing.

Remind yourself you are there to do a job. First, check out the companies policy on using the internet and then follow the policy. If you can't be trusted with a simple internet policy, chances are your company won't trust you with any real responsibility.
