Obsessions and Addictions?
e.g genetics, circumstances, environment, intellect, etc ....
Answer:
,I believe all three can influence a person. For example I am 1/3 Native American, 1/3 German, and the rest of me is a little Irish, and various other things. I am not a drinker. I just can't stand the taste, and being drunk doesn't do a thing for me. Now take my relatives! The majority of them are hard core alcoholics. Why not me? I have three races in me that are known to have problems with alcohol but I don't. I was raised in the same environment, same genetics, and I am no more or less intelligent than my relatives. This is a very good question and I can't wait to see all the answers you will get.
Well, latest theory is that it's a combo of genetics and environment.
i believe some of it is in our upbringing. certain obsessive disorders can be gotton from seeing our parents / siblings with same or similar
Psycological issues. Lack of self confident causes obsession. Being emotionally weak to face stress = addiction. Its all about social life that causes psycological issues not environmental neither genetic nor intellectual.
Many things.
A slight genetic predisposition in character.
Our early years Attachment experiences, leading to the ability or inability to deal effectively with our own emotions.
Mental illness leading to self medication (stopping voices , fighting depression etc) .
Much of the deal is circumstancial, what they call ",set and setting" combinations of circumstances apply, abusive partner, poverty etc that trigger learned responses
I think the only thing that doesnt apply is intellect, heroin addicts are not addicted because they are dim, many are very very bright and creative people.
Intellect may come into play as it leads to higher socioeconomic experiences and so gives more social protection from the factors which cause pressure to use.
Some say nature as in genetics play a part..and some would say nurture.as in some form of abuse in younger years. Probably it would be a bit of both.
There is no one thing that causes a person to be obsessive or to become an addict. Yes, there are genes that are linked to addiction and loads of scientific evidence to back this up. But one must also take into account the environment in which one grows up in. The immediate family has the most impact on young children, whereas the friends/peers have the most influence on a teenager. Now, I know people who had crackheads for parents and turned out fine, and I know people who had two perfectly normal parents who ended up becoming crackheads themselves. There is no one model to interpret this question because everyone's life is different. Circumstance I think plays a major role when it comes to addiction. Some people were never given the tools to deal with life's bad situations, and use drugs or obsessions as a way of control and escape in a world where they feel helpless and out of control. A person may be completely normal (free of addiction and obsession), then they experience, say the death of someone very close to them and become addicted to drugs in order to deal with the pain that they're feeling.
Intellect, I believe has very little to do with obsessoin and addiction. Personally, I have known addicts who were very intelligent (like geniuses) and I've also known addicts who only had a 6th grade education level. Usually though, low intellect equals low econminc status which in itself is a risk factor for drug abuse and addiction.
So I guess my answer in short is that ALL of those factors (minus intellect) play a part in addiction. There is no one set mold for this. People become addicts and have obsession for different combinations of reasons.
i believe it is both circumstances and environment. i am speaking from experience. if you change both of them, you can overcome addictions.
I believe that obsessive and addictive behaviours are of a psychosocial nature and not genetic.
