Why was I diagnosed with Aspergers?

I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome which clearly I do not have because I love socializing with people that I meet. I have friends some who are younger, older as well as the same age as me. I disagree that people with AS only need friends their own age. You can learn form older and younger people as well. I am 23 and am a mentor to a younger person. I finished my BA degree and am looking for a good job. I can take the bus since it is so expensive to have a car. And I don't want to hurt anyone. I have never had a run-in with the law.

People like my sense of humor. I also make good eye-contact and know how to speak with others. I have so many interest that I like to read about from travel to cooking to psychology. I can travel overseas alone without a problem and I can learn different languages. This crazy psychologist did not want to listen to my view of the dx. I learned slower than others so I was in Resource. Do yo think I was misdiagnosed or could I have been cured.

Answer:
You can't be cured of AS - either you are or your aren't. My older brother was dx'd in his late 30's. I always saw him to be quite sociable, had lots of friends. I never noticed the lack of empathy that is suppose to be prevalent with AS. He's a general surgeon now. I will say though that my mom said he was a very difficult child growing up but aren't a lot of us. I don't know, this is a difficult thing because AS people are so high functioning I think it makes it difficult to say one way or the other.

There must have been something your doctor saw that lead him to go in that direction. Maybe a 2nd opinion is warranted.
Some people have Aspergers with very few symptoms of the syndrome. Possibly (and most likely) you yourself dont notice the very symptoms you claim you dont have. When you are programed from birth that you are normal, when you have been doing something wrong for that long, when you are told your not normal you're not going to believe it without examining yourself Thoroughly
seems like a wrong diagnosis to me too, unless he /'she just looked at one symptom of the disorder and came to that conclusion. You first need to find another therapist because if she/he is not willing to listen to you as the client, then they are actually not a good therapist!
That is a hard one because you do not agree with the diagnosis you should get a second or third opinion. Many people with this form of autism are extremely functional. Like all autism there are degrees of it, some people have more issues than others.
I've known a few people with Aspergers and you can tell almost from the second you meet them that there is something wrong.
If you like other people the way you say you do, and you can understand sarcasm and facial expressions then it is likely that you were misdiagnosed. But no one can diagnose someone from what they write about themselves, you really need to seek another professional in order to figure out what the real problem is. If they keep saying it's Aspergers then you may have to figure out what your own symptoms are.
Have you been able to get a second opinion? I work in the mental health field and have seen many children and teenagers get mis-diagnosed. Specifically, I have seen incorrect aspergers dx before. There are so many disorders that fall into the "neurodevelopmental" category that it is possible you have some close cousin to aspergers such as sensory inegration disorder (SID often have learning issues co-morbid so this would also explain the resource help you needed). Ultimately, "aspergers is as aspergers does". I know that sounds simplistic but if you have friends, seek out support from others, have reciprocal 2 way relationships where you listen well and are a good friend then really don't worry too much about your official dx. Keep on working at your success and seek out the best environment for you to be successful. I would be interrested to know why you sought out a dx at this time, are there current problems? many children with neuro-developmental issues can have a situation where secondary characteristics such as depression or anxiety can crop up in young adulthood. Take good care of yourself, don't worry and just know that since you have already been successful, you will continue to be. Best of luck to you and take care.
If you truly feel that you were misdiagnosed, go to another psychologist and get another diagnosis, with no prior diagnosis.

I think the real issue here is that you are an apparently healthy and active and productive person who has many attributes and abilities. Run with that!

You are not your diagnosis, or label, no matter what it is!
It sounds like you were misdiagnosed for sure. Aspies tend to have above average intelligence so if you are a slow learner then that's another reason why you were misdiagnosed. Time for a second opinion.
Aspergers is over diagnosed and under diagnosed (at the same time) A lot of people have it very mildly and do socialize and what-not. if you don't seem to have any problems functioning just don't worry about it. Perhaps you don't/perhaps you do. What the psychologist says isn't going to actually change anything.
Also: people with AS don't necessarily want to hurt some one or have run ins with the law. it could happen, but it's not a symptom that know of. I know some one with AS who has a great sense of humor.
