Do You Agree that MOST STEREOPTYPES are true??
Answer:
Absolutely! And this usually has absolutely nothing to do with skin color, or country of origin; it usually has to do with BEHAVIORAL tendencies.
But you can't deny your too statements. I've seen many black people on tv and in movies and in the neighborhood and I've never seen one, regardless of age, sex, or size, that couldn't dance any other people into the ground, and I've NEVER once seen an asian person driving a bus, or a garbage truck, or a big rig, or tractor, or a city bylaw vehicle. Because let's face it, they can build em like nobody's business, but they can't drive! We had an asian shipper at work for a few weeks; he drove the forklift into the wall, and the bay door!My step dad is Chinese, and while he's never been in an accident, he drives at a max speed of 40kpm. The usual speed limit in the city is 50-60. Canada don't forget.
But no these are not just random tags, they are a general knowledge of characteristics that stood out enough to be noticed by everyone. Now to accuse someone of any of them on the basis of nothing is wrong of course. And they are not all necessarily bad.
But all situations deserve a little bit of the benefit of the doubt, with a little common sense thrown in
Not all sterotypes are true but it's just that one statement is said about someone and that statement is kept going and it evolves.
Well it isn't like the person who made up a stereotype has seen all asian people in the world or all black people. for example like the sterotype that all black people like watermelon my brother dosen't even like watermelon. so no they are not all true.
but not all people from the south hunt and fish and drink beer
no, just because something is a stereotype doesn't mean its true more than half the time
I don't agree completely.
I will say that there does seem to be a kernel of truth in stereotyping, it is usually more a matter of degree.
And often people will surprise you if you give them the chance, ie look at them to try to see who they really are.
Good, thought provoking question.
Wrong. In my humble opinion.
Many stereotypes date back to days when racism was very common. Oddly, this was supported by some by Darwin's findings - they were able to twist their world views to match the idea that white men were at the top of the evolutionary ladder. (Guess who did that? White men.)
Women (even white women) were seen as to fragile to do anything very mentally difficult. (This wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that at the time, culturally it was considered a bad idea to teach women to read? It was considered too stimulating, in a negative way.)
While your example seems pretty harmless - and may not affect your life or anything - if you are thinking in the back of your head that you don't want to catch a ride with me because I'm a woman driver - that could negatively impact me. For example, if you are hiring someone to do delivery work and use your company car - would you choose a man over me? Would it matter that I'm 1/2 Asian? That is when stereotypes hurt.
btw, in case you wonder, I have my Class B commercial driver's license and have a clean driving history.
(I do like your question - you are THINKING about these things, and awareness is important!)
living in the south i know alot about stereotypes. and yes some are true but most really aren't. like when i tell people where im from they automatically assume im some inbred beer drinking nascar fan!(which im definitely not!) it's the same with any race or culture when people don't understand it they make these accusations that eventually become a stereotype. for instance i've met several asians who can't drive but my ex-girlfriend was from japan and she can outdrive the best dirt track racers on the circuit! just the same as all black people aren't criminals and all mexicans aren't lazy freeloaders. in fact most of the people i work with are latino and there some of the hardest working people on our crew! so no all stereotypes are definitely NOT true. its just the result of racist a-holes trying to find any excuse to bash another race.
Stereotypes are statistical constructs created from random observations and confirmed by a few more random observations. They are not the exact representation of types after exhaustive studies of a given universe of data. For this reason, while stereotypes can be rough guides to help you proceed in a broad direction, they will need to be rectified on the basis of accurate anlysis of the entire universe at the micro level, before they can be assumed to fully represent that universe.. This is more so in the case of subcultures, game fans, cinema and theatre afficionados etc, which have only one assured common trait that you know of.
Absolutely true!
Nothing is considered a "stereotype" until it sticks to some truth about what it is about. Until then the slander cannot even de defined as a stereotype.
You ask if it is wrong to state stereotypes - I would have to say its wrong to perpetuate them, even if you believe thm to be true. Also one should not use them to disgace a single person or small group of poeple.
Your right. My first communications class taught me that stereotyping is part of how we communicate. Its normal and shouldn't judge ourselves or others too harshly but it is not something that we should allow ourselves to do a lot and you should notice when you are doing it so as to limit how much you do it because it can turn into thinking that all of a certain race does something and then wouldn't that be racist?
Not At All, The Word Pretty Much Explains Itself, STEREOTYPE.. Its Pretty Much An Assumption Of A Person And When You Assume Things About Someone You Make An #ss Out Of Yourself..
ya i feel the same way but also some people take it to a diffrent level and figure if its true for one it must be true for all.. although i do think all black people like chicken ..lol jk dont mean to offend any one just a joke
Stereotypes are just that because they only focus on a small segment of the population that they are talking about. I"m from a Black family and most people assume that all tall Black men are interested in the NBA Well I had six brothers and none of them were interested in the NBA and all of them but one were over 6' tall. I have a lot of male cousins who are tall and not one of them is into the NBA for anything but as a spectator sport. I would say that stereotypes that are just figment of society's idea of one race or nationality. Stereotypes are wrong because they don't take into account the diversity within a race or nationality. Also it is wrong to perpetrate the ideas behind stereotypes because that just teaches more people that taking one idea and running with it is the way to evaluate a group of people.
Stereotypes do not apply to everyone.
They apply to a lot of people, in one way or another.
Most people fit into some kind of stereotype.
It is not right to assume that every single person of some certain race or age or whatever does everything exactly as you imagine.
But it is okay to admit that stereotypes do indeed exist and apply at times.
And one of the reasons that stereotypes sometimes apply is that people know they exist, and they make themselves fit into those stereotypes, they subconsciously feel obligated to make sense within their own world, and to fit in with other people who act a certain way.
