What is up with people today?

Looking around at most of the people around me, it seems they all have very topical life styles. People who all they care about is having the newest fast car, the largest McMansion on the block, and spending thousands on plastic surgery when there was nothing physcally wrong with them to begin with. Seriously, there are children in as young as 1st grade that get picked on if they are not wearing name brand clothes.
Where did this "me first" mentality come from?
I think that we as a scocity would grow so much stronger and healthier if those topical people would focus on real issues at hand like poverty or the earth, or just simply start being more true to themselves.
What are your opinions?

Answer:
I think you are correct. I believe the answer will be in the younger generations who will come to understand the excesses of the 90's and then the fall of the US in world opinion as a nation. the pendulum swings, and my generation (I'm 47) has had too much success without enough sacrifice and therefore many can't see the wisdom of what you have said so clearly. We are in a decline, and when people come to realize these basic truths, there will be a rise in more idealism, more altruism and a more sustainable approach to living with the earth and with other nations.

The biggest caution though, is to not become pacifists. No matter how enlightened we might become, there is a residual effect of our past behavior, as well as a lot of other people in the world who have hatred and anger motivating them. the world is a dangerous place and we must be careful to protect ourselves.

The US has demonstrated clearly what it is willing to do to those who threaten us or attempt to harm us. Its time for us to back off our most aggressive postures and adopt a more diplomatic and harmonious posture, without giving the impression that we won't fight when need be. We can fight hard and long when necessary. I don't think any rational person among our enemies doubts that. Its the irrational people that are the biggest challenge for us.
True, but the complexity is that since we became a life form all we've tried to do is better ourselves and impress people. for a better chance to reproduce.
What ya doin is askin people to go against instinct, even though you are right.
We have very little values in the world today besides material belongings. You look at society, If a kid don't have the latest gadget then they are an outcast. I think our values and morals have gone out the door with each new "toy" we buy!
For the most part, (with the exception of personal greed) what you are seeing is mans basic animal insticts coming into play. Bullying or picking on the weaker is part of the pecking order in the animal kingdom. Only the strong get the choice cuts of meat (or toys).Only the strong get to breed (or hopefully attract the girls).
Greed for money, land or personal possessions is a flaw that is common only to man. Very rarely does an animal kill for a peice of land or for a mate.
We are a superficial country. I think we need to simplify our lives. We are selfish and lazy.
The Me First mentality you can thank to the Baby Boomers generation. Them being the parents that let their children have everything and were the first "me first" generation. If you look at other generations, they don't act like that (Those that survived the depression, those born before or during the second world war, Gen Xers). Once Baby Boomers and their kids aren't the main marketing target anymore, perhaps things will slow down. Till then, it's Money for Nothin' and Chicks for Free.

As for kids, it's a class structure. If kids didn't tease people on clothes, trust me they'd find something else that makes them look better than others. Thems just kids.
yup... its a materialistic response to "loving yourself" and i must agree that one must be able to love onself and take care of it to be able to take care of others but it really doesnt have to be that much... there is joy and contentment in little things, not so expensive things, things that add value to life even without spending much... like improving ones spirituality, relationship with others, disposition etc.
people today are less contented with themselves, less confident in them and they try to cover that up with all those bling2x, silicon, etc.
i think the best way to feel beautiful is be able to do something good for others and the society... like donate to charity, educate the poor, help protect the environment... these worthy causes can definitely make you feel good! you not only make yourself beautiful inside the aura reflects on the outside to!
You are simply experiencing the break-down that must occur before rebuilding can be initiated...a part of the "Chaos", so to speak.

We have historically been on a run-amok rampage...destroying & maintaining that destructiveness rather than focusing on the day or the future effect of such...hence, we have become parasites on this planet (a living organism of her own rite), rather than co-existent upon it...ergo, there are consequences to be met.

The "Changes" are upon us...and we have the choice to become part of them, or become extinct. Those changes include reconforming with balance of the sexes, respect for our diversities, & using our combined talents to re-create a healthful home/species, both planetary & individually.
