Why is it that we strive to establish our identity so much when it is clear that all is infact temporary?

Very good question. Actually this is the foundation of all the philosophy of the east such as hinduism, buddhism, jainism etc..
In india, a swami was asked the same question. He replied that though everything is temporary, life should be experienced as we watch a movie. We know perfectly that all things happening on the screen is not real yet we laugh, cry as though something real is happening around. With this wisdom in mind, any success or failure can make one laugh or cry but there will never be any disillusionment.

because we are here...now. It gives subastance to our lives. It keeps us positive.
and, we are only here for a season. After death we will be in either one of two places. so what we do now, determines where we will spent eternity..with or without God.
