Okay, I suppose--as long as there were also mermen :)
Humans as aquatic creatures, breathing water instead of air?
Well, that DOES have some interesting possibilities.
Our culture would certainly be drastically different!
Most of our common building materials would be unusable since they deteriorate so quickly in water.
We probably could not use fire, so all those aspects of our current industrialization that depend on extreme heat could not exist - such as refining ore into metal and molding substances that require melting first.
There certainly could not be internal combustion engines, since they depend on a mixture of gas and air.
We'd have fish or dolphins for pets instead of cats and dogs. Birds would be almost unknown to us.
Also, there is a good chance that we would not necessarily be at the top of the food chain in such an environment.
If we still fought wars, we would do so with drastically different weapons, since projectiles fired under water have very little effective range.
We might have some research stations located on dry land, where we would have to carry water tanks on our backs for breathing, but with fishtails instead of legs, getting around on land would be a real challenge!
Speaking of fishtails instead of legs, our clothing would be designed very differently. What portion of our anatomy would we have to cover to be socially acceptable? (A fish's "personal parts" are located at the end of its body, near the tail - not about halfway down its full length, like ours are.)
Speaking of that, would our offsprings be born live or hatch from egg-clusters?
There would certainly be no such thing as boots, shoes or stockings of any kind. Hats would not be very practical, as they would just float off our heads.
I guess the good news would be that we would no longer be bothered by cockroaches and mosquitoes!
