Sigmund Freud's theory??

I do not think Freud's theory that most flaws in adults can be traced back to an unhappy childhood, is pertinent in today's context...
In Freud's times, the parents were rough and fathers in particular used to regularly spank and abuse the children...
But times have changed now and owing to less childhood scars, I would like to believe that a person's company and exposure have a greater bearing on the kind of adult he turns out into...

I just want to have the views of Yahoo!Answerers on this topic. Views of psychology students like myself as well as non-pschology students are welcome.

Answer:
Personally, I have trouble believing in some of Freud's ideas...such as psychosexual "fixation" being the cause of mental health disorders. However, research does seem to support that childhood experiences can and do contribute to later mental health conditions in some people. There is support for the "double bind hypothesis"...the hypothesis that says that mental health conditions can be brought about or exacerbated by parents who give their children impossible tasks to complete, and the completion of these tasks are (as implicated by the parents) the "only way to win the parents approval." For example, parents who ingrain the idea that their child must become, for example, a college graduate in order for the parents to approve of (or love him/her), but at the same time directly sabotage the child's opportunities to do so...or, they expect the child to do this even when the child has such a low IQ that it is impossible for the child to accomplish this.
Childhood is also a time for the development of conscience. Parents play the biggest role in this area. If parents do not reinforce ideas that promote conscience development, the child will definitely have great trouble adapting to and living in a world that asks people to live by certain rules of conduct and ethical standards. This sets the child up for failure in future relationships, and in extreme cases, can lead a child down the path of criminality. Psychopaths and sociopaths have no conscience.
I also believe that Freud was on track when it comes to the power of the sub-conscious or unconscious mind. That the needs and the desires (as well as fears) of a person are very influential to a person's behavior, and that they are often unaware of the power of these influences on their behavior. I believe that "unlocking the unconscious" and allowing these things to be brought forth to the surface (the conscious level) can help people understand their own motivations at their deepest levels. This insight can be very helpful to getting people to understand patterns of their own destructive or non-productive behavior.
I tend to think that insight alone is not enough, however, to have in order to successfully treat mental health conditions that plague a person's day-to-day life. I think that people also need cognitive and behavioral therapy. I believe that people DO have "free will", and do strive toward personal growth when they have "cleared the pathway" in their lives to do so (humanistic psychology.)
The relationship between parents and children today is based on understanding and friendship. Of course we must reprimand as and when red but we need not get physical. 'Love' is the essence of better upbringing. We need to cultivate hobbies for kids such that the spare time is more directional and educative. We need to give space to our kids what we missed when we were kids. Lets learn by what we did not cherish.
Actually Freud's theory was that flaws found in adulthood would have their roots in unconscious memories from childhood.

And times have not changed all that much. People still regularly abuse children. And people have found other ways to make children into victims. Parents are not being allowed to discipline bad behaviour properly, is it any wonder that juvenile delinquency rates have gone way up? Or for that matter, what would the prime defining factor for a "latchkey child" be? Didn't see any of those in Freud's time... What about kids who start abusing illegal substances that were given to them by their parents (like cigarettes & alcohol)?

Abuse/neglect come in many different forms. As we develop newer technologies, we seem to be slowing in our personal development and evolution. Should children be raised by their parents? Or should they instead have the benefit of having specially educated mentors & professional caregivers to stimulate their development?

Who decides?
yeeE! i took psych in highschool (after 11th ) and i learned that 60% of who you are is based on your genes actually. even though child abuse is less common these days there are other ways that parents can affect a childs mind. like not giving them proper attention or favoring one sibling over an other. some kids are raised in rich families where the words "mother and father" have completely different meanings and it is the nannies that take care of the kids. some kids grow up parentless in orphanages. some kids' parents are divorced resulting in family tensions. and in many 3rd world countries child abuse isn't any better than it was in Freud's time.

Modern psychologists say that mild spanking backed by supportive parenting should not cause long term damage to the child (Baumrind, Larzelere, & Cowan, 2002)
his theory was as per his times the only permanent thing in life is CHANGE and as u rightly say it /his theory is totally out dated and baseless today
Kid's have it tough all over.Today probably more so then in the past.I wouldn't discount Freud on this.

The chamber of childhood is as vulnerable as ever.Trauma of all sort is abundant
When I was in school I had many problems as well regarding Freud's theory because of biblical beliefs and GOD'S instructions to the human race.
In Proverbs 22:15 it says, foolishness is bound in the heart of a child;but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13-14,says "Withhold not correction from the child;for if thou beatest him with the "rod", he shall not die. (14) "Thou shall beat him with the rod ,and shalt deliver his soul from hell."
Proverbs29:15, " The rod and reproof give wisdom;but a child left to himself bringeth shame to his mother .
Further study of the bible clarifies how discipline should be handed down. People's failure to read, understand and follow GOD"S percise instructions has and will result in child abuse which GOD did not intend by these directions;and we each will be held accountable for neglecting to follow "HIS WORD".
Colossians 3:20-21, " Children ,obey your parents in all things;for this is well pleasing unto the Lord".
The book of Galatians and Ephesians offers much insight on how we are to live our earthly life until the return of Jesus.
GOD created FREUD;so how did he become to know more than GOD..?? I don't recall him teaching or describing what is going to happen when GOD decides to end this world. Mark 13:1-17clearly states it.
You do know that in the book of Isaiah,14:12-15 there is a brief history of Satan's fall from heaven, he too thought he knew more than GOD. It reads, How art thou fallen from heaven ,O Lucifer(satan's name),son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou has said in thine heart, "I WILL EXALT MY THRONE ABOVE THE STARS OF GOD:I WILL SIT ALSO UPON THE MOUNT OF THE CONGREGATION,IN THE SIDES OF THE NORTH:I WILLASCEND ABOVE THE HEIGHTS OF THE CLOUDS ;I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH.YET;THOU SHALT BE BROUGHT DOWN TO HELL,TO THE SIDES OF THE PIT. The book of Ezekial gives a Typology in king of Tyre,28:11-19.
Men have "FLAWS" because of disobedience! In their hearts they've decided not to obey GOD, whether they admit it or not. To follow satan, and a third of the angels(unseen "spirits" that influence Pride, Envy, Hatred, Selfishness,Jealousy,Lust, Fornication,Unnatural desires for each other including animals, Drug and Alcohol, Murder,Greed ,Desperation or anything we define as bad) that were tossed from heaven along with satan are "DEMONS" that operate on satan's orders to Kill, Steal and Destroy those same people he deceived into following him ;... .. off-springs as well, are born laboring under a curse.
This is where Jesus came into the picture,he gave his life so that we as born sinners under our foreparents,ADAM and EVE , would have the same opportunity as they(free will) to accept Jesus in our hearts, learn and put into practice the teachings in the bible and come from under Generational Curses of our earthly parents.
God wants us to obey his word.
When studying Freud, I encourage you to always pick up the bible and consult with the "original author "on human behavior,God.
As far as I'm concerned, Freud 's theory is a trick of the devil to confuse us and redirect our thoughts ,hearts and minds away from GOD.
It is already written in the bible and has been there for thousands of years, the signs to pay attention to-to see the fulfillment of the bible,so that we would have faith believe and accept GOD. In the 70's, I was truly amazed to learn that it is against the will of GOD to be "TATTOOED"( LEVITICUS 19:27-28) Here we are almost 40 years later with people covering their whole bodies ,even faces with them.opening the door for satanic curses and flaws in man;.. and many don't realize why they are having so many problems in their lives. DISOBEDIENCE and following any word other than GOD'S word will surely bring heartache , disappointments and the lost of salvation.
