Why do human beings possess a sense of humour, from an evolutionary, Darwinian perspective?

My contention is that a human being could survive (albeit miserably) , yet perfectly well, without one. So why do we have a sense of humour? It's more than just a social thing. I still find funny movies funny, even when I watch them alone, for instance.

Answer:
From an evolutionary, Darwinian perspective, we probably need this emotional state to help us express anxiety on another form, lighter than the other, and to interact with others human as part of the human language. A smile is universal.
It opens our hearts to have hope when things are desperate.
There was a study that said people laugh as a social response, which I think is bs, because like you said I also laugh at things while alone. though you can see the herd instinct kick in at Comedy clubs.
Because having a sense of humor is attractive in a mate, it's one of the things people look for. So, from an evolutionary perspective - a sense of humour attracts the opposite sex, if you have a good sense of humour you are more likely to find a mate and have offspring.
