Where does the sadness come from when somebody dies?

Here's the thing: My grandmother died two weeks ago. Didn't know her very well and what I knew (despite the common opinion not to say anything bad about dead people) I didn't like a lot. That's one thing.
The other is: She was 94 and fell down the concrete stairs to the basement the week before. Hospital, back home again for 2 days and then she died.
My first thought, when I got the news, was: Good. She died at home, peacefully in her bed and it hasn't been a long struggle. AND she had my mother around, so she wasn't alone.
That's actually all very positive. So why being sad?
I cried and felt so wacked out for a couple of days. Drained. Where does this come from?

Answer:
Homo sapiens are not good at surviving on their own. The human body knows its very survival is threatened if the social network that you are associated with becomes weakened. The family unit tends to be the strongest component of one's social network. So when a family member is lost, your body pumps chemicals into you that create the emotion of sadness. This way the body ensures that you will try to keep your familial bonds strong and therefore increases its own chances of survival.
