Do you think society standards are a mental template meant to distort natural personalities?

Answer:
Good question! I think we need certain standards in order to live peacefully, and everybody has different standards that they live by. In the long run I do believe the government has installed false morals and standards in people so that they can better control us in every aspect of life. For instance, take people who become disabled on the job, I believe the government has attempted to brainwash us into believing that every person, no matter what their disability is capable of working, so that they do not have to pay back social security that they have already spent and so major insurance companies don't have to pay the bill either. Think about this the next time someone is on light duty where you work. Watch what co-workers say about them and watch what kind of jobs the company gives them. It is all set up this way in the hopes that injured people will give up and take their own life. I've seen it many times, and guess what, the majority of the time it works because the person becomes hated and begins to feel worthless, they begin to face financial strain and are refused help, and on top of that they are degraded by the rest of society. I had to fight for 2 years after leaving my job to get disability, and because my husband was disabled we had absolutely no income. Our water was shut off, our property taxes weren't paid, our electricity got shut off. I know, it happened to me and my husband, a neighbor who is no longer with us and my husbands brother who also committed suicide. Welcome to the American dream. The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. : )
I don't think so but people are definitely affected by it.
Yes definitely so. Is it scary that I get this question? No, thank you for asking it. It may cause some to ponder an actual sentence of substance.
Absolutely not... I'd say the key is finding a job or function within society in which you can outlet your personality. I'm not sure what you mean by personality, if you are talking about the Myers Briggs then society can be helpful. If you think that we are naturally beastly or something along those lines I would have to disagree. I think humans have through evolution been able to wear off a good amount of their aggressive side; there is definitely room for improvement though.
it depends on what your perception of society is.you can choose to allow others who believe differently than you to influence your behavior, or you can look to identify with those that have similar ideals. you shouldn't have to be self conscious
No, I am not sure they are meant to distort. I think they are meant to magnify natural personalities.
Its only popular paranoia that leads people to believe that in a rapidly improving world, everyone is out to "distort" you. Americans should consider Japan, a largely homogeneous society. How do you think they maintain their "natural personality" as you put it when being unique is punishable to the average citizen by utter isolation from peers? They breed personality and establish themselves within themselves instead of wear it on their clothes. A lesson to be learned by expanding your horizons.
society(government,media,corpo... everyone to a mindless working robot. as long as they pump us full of anti-depressants we just wont give a damn. they keep telling us that they'll protect us from "evil do-ers" and ourselves as they take away more and more of our rights, all the while filling our heads with stupid reality shows and who's the most bulemic in hollywood.give me a break!
yes and no. in some cases definitely yes, the upper class who feel they have to put on a 'show' every time they go out, this also includes celebrities, Royals, politicians.

Normal people, tend to be themselves unless the occasion is special, nobody has any society standards when they are drunk, then all the covers are off!
According to Freud, the id acts on the pleasure principle- that is it is peoples nature to live life to the full- however, Freud also belived that pleasure involved satisfying sexual urges, and many things that are socially undesirable such as acting in agression. therefore the ego acts on the reality principle. the ego tries to satisfy the urges of the id. so if you go by freud, then yes society distorts a natural personality to be sexual and agressive animals- but prehaps this is for the good.
