Do you feel that a lie detector test is an accurate assessment for determining truth? Explain why or why not.?
Answer:
Lie detectors measure your biological response to a question.(pulse, etc) Alot of people get nervous when they know they are lying, which is why it sometimes works. But they are easy to beat if you can control your body's responses. I took one for a job once, and lied all through it, made up a work history, companies that didn't even exist. I passed with flying colours. The only question it indicated that i LIED on was my NAME. (one of the few questions that I answered with the truth) The reason? I was still carrying my ex's last name, and referring to myself with it agitated me.
yes, unless it's a very irrelevant question
I think lie detectors should be used as a tool to further prove that a person is guilty. They should not be the only proof that someone is lying. You need to have proof in the form of physical evidence. You can't convict just based on what someones heart beat is doing.
I don't think of it as a useful way to assess/determine truth.
If a person REALLY believes that the lie they are saying is true, then I don't think the detector will be able to discern the biological/physiological changes in the person's body that it normally uses to determine that the statement is a lie.
But that's just my opinion :)
