Why does Everyone who Sees someone Yawn, Yawn themselves?

I've been wondering about this for years and never found an answer. When I see a person yawn, I usually yawn. Then when somebody sees me yawn they yawn. It's like it's catching.

There's even a new commercial on television by one of the Cola makers that hammer it home. It's a hoot watching everyone yawn and yawn - except this one guy who's drinking that brand.

But anyway - I've noticed this reaction since I was young - and others have too.

So, does anyone know what causes it?

Please no spammers or stupid answers. Lets have some real thoughts on why this happens.

Thanks,

Ken

Answer:
It is b/c of your limbic system... in the same way that when your brain registers a genuine smile you automatically smile back... yawning triggers a copy response. There are many other reactions like this that people are generally unaware of... for example: when you are interested in a person sexually take notice of how you mimic their behaviors... this is in order to send a subconscious message that you are in fact interested in them.
it's just a self-conscious act... when you see a yawn it triggers your brain to THINK about yawning.. and so it makes you yawn too.
weird-i was just aBOUT TO ASK THE VERY SAME QUESTION! i once yawned with someone 36 times consequatively in a car-maybe enclosed spaces encourage this. it must be psychological because i'm yawning now just thinking about it!
me and my boyfriend are the same
I've pondered the same thing before. It must be psychological. Here is why...animals don't do that. I mean, they yawn, but not when they see another animal yawn. Honestly, I have yawned and tried to see if I could get my cat to yawn or my dog, but it doesn't work on them! lol Seriously though, I think it is more like when someone says they are tired, we are like, "oh, me too...". And then you really do feel tired after you think about it. It just triggers our brain to think about how tired we are and that triggers the yawn.
Last time I took a psych course, there was no concrete answer to this question.
Some believe it's the power of suggestion, similar to the placebo affect. E.G. when someone needs to use the restroom, or runs a faucet, then it makes you think of going to the restroom, and so on.
Some believe its the innate need to identify with others. You're affected subconsciously by another person's state, and identify with them by mirroring actions. This can be found in body language.
Such an ambigous thing, "contagious" yawning!
Perhaps it's because we humans are meant to be pack animals, but we've developed our minds into individuality. But we are still these pack animals so we are bound to copy each other from time to time. Same happens sometimes when you see someone scratch their nose.
what i know if you feel sleepy your yawning right?
