Psychology Degree Does it have enough Merit?
My question being, some years ago I was in the position in my work-place ( Human Sevices working with Homeless young people through a Shelter and medium to long Term supported housing Organisation) to have to pick at a job interview an applicant with no Degree versus the person with the Psycology Degree ( 4 years ).
I went with the applicant with the degree and they turned out to not have any skills whatsoever and did not last the Probationary period ( 3 months ).
My point being is there enough emphasis with the degree to Warrrant an over haul and more time practical skills to be achieved within the degree so that Qualified Psycologists have atttained necessary ( lateral thinking qualifications ) before a degree is Achieved
Failing that alot of academic"s are Graduating as professional students not those who realistically work in the Field and or in Private Practice.
And I don"t believe that to be fair!
Answer:
Hi Adrian,
I have heard similar things said in other areas i.e. someone having been a mechanic all his life with no qualifications to speak of, having ten times the ability of someone with a degree who knows it all in their head, but is unable to put their knowledge into practice. This possibly goes for nursing too when now the emphasis is on classroom learning and getting a degree when in the past nurses used to spend most time training on the job.
Certainly when I studied for my degree, there was a marked difference in the ability and understanding of the students and it was felt the older students, with more life experience, seemed to find the subject far easier. Some students will carry others and therefore they will pass without any in-depth understanding or empathy of their subject. At least the three months probabtionary period gives you a chance to separate the wheat from the chaff!

Psychology degree does have merit. You should have checked credentials more carefully. We spoil alot of graduates making them believe they are going to make a lot of money and life is so much more perfect than it is. You choice a spoiled person. It's a shame. I feel psychology is important but only if the person has a masters degree with plenty of interning.
