Why do people listen to these big-money politicians?

..Exactly! And why do so many people listen to TV evangelists?
My guess is that
1. An astounding number of people are gullible, not at all critical thinkers...
2. The politician or preacher is telling them what they want to hear.
Remember, the LCD (lowest common denominator) is a very big number.
Many are listening so that they can determine which politician espouses the philosophies which most closely match their own.
I don't personally believe that a significant number of Americans are manipulated to think like or agree with a certain politician.
They are just looking for the politician who sings the tune that has been reverberating in their own head.
