Help a psychology question about independent and dependent variables!?

question is do children with high self esteem perform better at school than children with low self esteem
the hypothesis it is predicted that children with high self esteem do better at school then children with low self esteem! whats the independent variable and the dependent variable?? please help im so confused!! please!

Answer:
Can't help pointing out that, you can't tell whether the esteem is (at least partly) caused by school performance.

I mean, having teachers tell you you're not good, and parents unhappy with your performance, may well erode a child's self esteem.

The 'dependent' is the one that's cause by the other; the 'independent' is the one that causes the other.
The independent variable is the child's self-esteem - Let's say you assign a rating or score for each child, based on their own reported level of self-esteem - 1 is lowest, 10 is highest. Those numbers are the independent variables, because, for this hypothesis, they will not change, therefore they are "independent" of other factors. The child's performance at school (again, assign a rating) is the "dependent" variable, because it will depend on (or be affected by) the child's score (at least for the purposes of this hypothesis).
Hope this helps.
