What is narcissistic personality disorder and why does one become so?
Would like to know specificially if these individuals are born narcissitic or whether it's a defense of some sort?
Answer:
Narcissistic PD is when individuals put others down in order to feel good about themselves --- so yes, it is a defense. They believe they are defective and in order to preserve their self-worth, they become narcissistic --- so they may blame others around or the world in order to defend themselves from what they actually think about themselves in that something is wrong with them.
Also, it's usually because they have been treated as being very special as youngsters which is why they can't harbour the thought that they may not be so perfect after all.
Hope this helps...
Additionlly, if you want to understand the diagnostic criteria, I'd suggest looking up the DSM-IV-TR in the library.
Good luck!
while the above answer is good;
specific DSM-IV criteria is grandiosity (exaggerate everything) need for admiration (mirroring other). lack of empathy (don't feel bad for other), they have a sense of entitlement, and are exploitative (exploit things).
though it is unsure why they are this way, People suffering from this disorder often were spoiled, idealized, treated like a kings from their parents. this leads o the feeling of entitlement. because of the parents failure to acknowledge healthy grandiosity, they have a fragile sense of self worth, low self esteem and need attention from other.
thank you come again
I respectfully disagree with much of the above.
The DSM definitions are correct, however.
A narcissistic personality is one that needs constant approval from others. He or she has learned that the only way to be loved and respected is to be the absolute best at everything.
Children who are neglected emotionally are most likely to develop this. They learn to bend over backward to get the attention of their parents. They may get any material thing they want but never the simple love and affection they need. People think "spoiled" because they may have gotten any physical object they asked for but they are, really, terribly neglected.
They learn to lie and exaggerate to get the affection they need. They never learned to think about how others feel because no one bothered to teach them that it matters. Others treated them as if they didn't matter.
Narcissistic people seem to care only about themselves when, to them, all they care about is simply being good enough to be loved by someone.
It's a terrible disorder and takes years of therapy to deal with.
