Sleeping patterns, is this common?

Every once in awhile I go through a period of not needing to sleep. I'll sleep for an hour or two and wake up completely refreshed, which is great since a lot of the time I wake up more exhausted than I was before I went to bed! Sometimes I just stay in bed anyways, because few hours of sleep a day can make life so boring!

Anyway, I was under the impression that this was normal behavoir and that everyone goes through periods like this. I remember once even waking up every night to clean my parents bathroom or play when I was 7 years old. Both were fun for me at night!

Recently, I was talking to my mother at some ridiculous time of day (diff time zones) and she seems to think it's something to worry about. My father told her no, it's normal for me and I've been like this for as long as he can remember. In fact, my father, mother, my husband and my brother do the same thing from time to time! Is it common? Why is she worried? I'm not especially stressed or anything, just happy!

Answer:
If it's not having a negative affect on your life, then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Different people need different amounts of sleep to feel refreshed and revived. I think you are lucky to be able to function with little or no sleep. I can't. My wife and I both have terrible sleep patterns due to our pain problems and neither of sleep well so we never feel refreshed. Only when your sleep patterns interfere with your life would I be worried. Good luck and be well.
Well, alone it doesn't necessarily mean anything horrible. I don't think bouts of insomnia are all that uncommon. But if you have other symptoms such as periods of depression, impulsive behavior (such as reckless driving, excessive spending/shopping, excessive gambling, drug/alcohol use increase, etc), suicidal thinking, loss of interest in your normal activities, weight changes, or changes in appetite, please be evaluated by your doctor and, if everything checks out medically, by a psychiatrist.

Insomnia can be a symptom of many, many different things. Or, it can just be stress, too much caffine or poor sleep habits.
