Are you able to be happy when there is sadness in your environment?
I've met some "feel-good" people who always seem happy because they pretend to ignore the ugliness in the world around them. Is it the right formula? To be selfish?

And killing your good mood is going to help the less forunate how exaclty? Why worry over something that you are powerless to change?
Hmmm...well there is a difference between people who "ignore" anything unpleasant, and those that are aware of the bad things going on, and use their knowledge to feel more thankful of what they themselves have in their lives. In other words, some people are happy because they are delusional, and some are happy because they are wise. I don't think being delusional is selfish, it's just..delusional. Do you not "feel good"? Also, keep in mind that when people don't feel good, they usually keep it to themselves, or only tell close friends. You can't just go around dumping your depression on everyone who walks by.
You can't do anything about the suffering around the world so you have to choose either be miserable all your life or enjoy what you have.
I don't think it is wise to ignore everything going on in the world, but allowing yourself to internalize all the wrong and evil in this world would be detrimental to a healthy mental state. I don't think these "feel good" people are ignoring the ugliness, though I'm sure some do, but must shut out the ugliness. Why let the state of the world affect you so much that you cannot be happy? This is the world we live in and to live life depressed and angry due to circumstances out of your control would be madness. I think the best way to deal with situations in this world would be to positively effect those around you and control circumstances that you can. Of course, there are those that do ignore anything out of their protective bubble, but the majority of people see the wrongdoing and influence what they can. There is a point where we have to put our own happiness and that of those we care about above all else and not let the ugliness of the world effect us to the point that we cannot be happy. I don't view this as selfish behavior, but as survival instinct
