Why do some people live in a false reality?

Perception is not the same as reality. For me, reality is what is happening at this moment and what is truthfully recorded as history. I believe that many people rationalize events in their respective lives in an attempt to be OK with things in their life. This is not reality but more of a justification for their actions, in my opinion. I guess it's kind of like a person that steals a candy bar believing that the action hurts no person and trying to justify the action by stating that the owner has money and will never miss the candy bar. Or, the single mother who believes it is the State, Country, or charities responsibility to help provide for the child she cannot provide food, clothing and other essentials. I doubt that she could ever be convinced that the child is her responsibility and if she could not afford to care for the child she should not have gotten pregnant. In my opinion, this is a false reality.

Answer:
I had a wife like that. She got washed out of the police academy after only one week. I would hear her tell people at parties that she used to be a cop. What a lie! Oh, I mean false reality.
they refuse to look at or deal with what is real because they may have to go through something difficult that they don't want to face
There is a larger truth beyond what has occured in so called reality.
People do not know better.
However, that larger truth still exists in their desperate attempts to grasp it.
Hi Captain

I think you're quite right to say that "perception" is not the same as "reality".

HOWEVER

"Perception" is all we have in this life.

For example: Human beings are limited in the range of colors we can see, and in the range of sounds we can here. The exact range a particular person can see or hear depends on each individual, and whether they are sighted or blind, and whether they can hear or are deaf.

So, is "reality" different if a person can't see and/or can't hear? It certainly is for that person.

When we get onto the question of how people should live their lives the differences in perceptions are just so much more diverse.

To take your last point - the single mother.
You describe this mythical person as someone who expects everyone else to help her out, and say if she couldn't afford to care for the child then she shouldn't have gotten pregnant.

But do we know that any particular single mother DELIBERATELY got that way? No form of contraception is 100% perfect, so she may have been taking all the usual precautions but been downright unlucky.
Or maybe her partner swore blind he was going to marry her, and then walked out the moment she got pregnant.
Or whatever.

Those possibilities can also exist in "reality". And they can sometimes force people into seeking assistance when it's the last thing they would do by choice.

So what are YOUR perceptions on this.
Should all pregnant single mothers be forced to have an abortion? Regardless of their ethical beliefs?

Or is becoming a single mother OK, as long as you have the money to look after the child?

Whichever way you answer there will be plenty of people who disagree. Because their "perceptions" are different to yours.
People live in a false reality for a variety of reasons. That is, if you do in fact believe human beings, in fact, truly know the meaning of reality. Trauma, chemical dependency, and genetic disorders are common causes and treatment is difficult.
Perception and reality go hand-in-hand. Some perceive Bush as a good guy while others think he's the worse leader in the history of this country. Different perceptions and different realities. No person in this world could ever define another's sense of reality or what's realistic to them. We all look at things differently. In some cultures they'll chop your hand off for stealing, but that's not a realistic way of dealing with things in other cultures. It's never easy to pinpoint why people act how they act. There are so many things in this world that influence our lines of thinking that it may be an impossible task to understand everyone.
