Can't stop thinking?

I have no idea why, but I cannot seem to concentrate on one thing. I don't know how long it has been going on, but my mind is always racing, thinking about something, someone, or a situation of some kind. And it gets in the way so much. I am sitting and trying to study, but I cannot stop thinking about other things, like what happened this past weekend, what is going to happen soon, a past experience, something related to an interest, or something that is off topic. I try and say to myself "Look, what I am doing right now is the most important thing right now and you should be thinking about this." but it never works!! It makes studying almost impossible. It seems like I can never have a clear mind, because it is always so muddled up with other thoughts. It gets very aggravating that I just can't stop thinking.

Any advice?

Answer:
Not sure about how you clear it, but i find i do this too but normally when im stressing over something or im anxious about it. I normally try to resolve the issue then it helps...
Another thing i do which helps me is keep a note pad next to me or the bed at night if i cant sleep and i scribble these little notes down as the thoughts pop in my head..
I find it clears it then since ive given it some attention and then i go back to the notes later on when i have the time
have a cigarette (or some tea will work fine)
sit down, and meditate with a few "ohm's"
i have the same problem when i try to go to sleep,
but after about sitting down for twenty minutes without a distraction, im able to sleep just fine
Yes, your mind is too much in the beta mode. Try some deep breathing and relaxing to get it into the alpha mode.
It's a common problem. When I'm stuck trying to read something for class, I read it out loud. So I force my mind to focus on what I'm reading. It usually works. But basically it just comes down to your ability to relax. Stretch, put some music on, eat some cold fruit/snack...do whatever you need to do to clear your mind.
The answer before mine is correct, as in calming yourself down, except there are people (myself included) who end up on medication because of the very thing you're talking about. That's a big step though, so I'd try anything other than that before. Maybe self-hypnosis or acupuncture. If you can't calm down, or hypnosis or acupuncture don't work, then talk to your doctor. He or she might be able to prescribe something that will help, but not make you unable to deal with things. Good luck.
Set goals for yourself. Make your self work hard for just one hour, and then give yourself a little break, get a snack, but ONLY for 15 minutes. Then get back into things for another hour, and repeat until your job is done.
