Because humans are intensely social beings. They have strong needs / desires to belong to a social group. To not conform means to stand alone and that usually makes people uneasy. Whereas conforming allows them to feel safe and cozy.

Conforming is so much easier than standing up for yourself and for what you believe in. Comforming means you dont take risks either. Therefore, you always feel safe, you feel certainty, and you never feel disoriented or at risk.
