Why am I like this?

I'm guessing I still have unresolved self-esteem issues or something, but why is it that when someone gives me a compliment I think they have an ulterior motive and not only that I wonder why they choose to spend time with me anyway?

Answer:
I also have that too, i think my friends aren't really true to me somettimes and that they are just using me or something . I think its a defense mechanism that happens when you are exposed to a harsh world out there and that you don't know or can't stop helping to think that there is something bad or an ulterior motive that is going around your friends or something like you said. Don't worry, its not only you, many people have that and it varies in people.
think on the positive side honey
You seem like your very untrusting of others. I guess it just takes time with a certain person (bf for instance) for you to trust them more and know what they are saying is true and not a lie.
sounds like some paranoia to me. have you ever been verbally/emotionally abused before?
You obviously do not trust anyone. Have you had a bad experience in the past with a friend or loved one? Learn to relax more and take people as they are.
I have that feeling a LOT of times. What you stated could be the reason; however, it is not a terrible fault to be wary of flattery- I am. Most people are sincere, some aren't. As a cynic I don't trust nearly anyone. It's just impossible to overcome unless I am in love or have ultimate connection with someone I trust completely.

Doubt the ones you're with but give them a chance. If the chance is taken and their character is proven, open yourself to honest relationships. If the chance is destroyed or misused, you won't be hurt because you expected the worst.
I don't spend time with people I don't like because I'm trying to be nice, do you. If I don't like them it is probably cause I think they are dishonest or mean rude people. At 36 I still guard myself against people who say nice things to me, that is an issue with trust, not self-esteem.
