I want to become a drug counseler?
I'm an ex-drug addict. I would like to help people over come their addictions. I live in Kansas. How should I go about this?
Answer:
As a former chemical dependency counselor with 21 yrs experience, I admire you desire for wanting to help others. Contact your state licensing board that deals with addictions counselors. They will have the necessary requirements. My state requires a minimum of two years clean time and be off of probation. There is also an academic requirement. Some states have two year programs, others have a four year program. I will say this much, you better have your personal issues in one sock because you are working with some people who are seriously ill. Good luck!
call nine one one to tell the police about your problem
Enroll in a local training program. Don't let on about being an ex addict. Save that for your patients.
Call Alcoholics Anonymus or your local Community College to see if they have an accredited course. In most states, once you get past the general education courses it is about 18 credit hours to qualify. Good luck to you and congratulations.
