Why is this so hard to break?
When I was 15, my brother became severely depressed. It lasted 3 years but on and off for a total of about 6 years. During this time, I started using the internet a lot. If I wasn't out with friends or running etc, I was online until early in the AM sometimes because I wouldn't think about my brother's depression or my parent's reaction then. Now, 12 years later, I can't break my internet use. My fingers/wrists hurt constantly and I am going to dental school where I need to use them.
I have tried cutting down but it lasts a week maybe and then I'm right back on worse than ever. My brother isn't depressed anymore. Why does my internet obsession still linger?
Answer:
Because although at first you were using the internet to repress your feelings of your brother's depression, now it has turned into an obsession and it is routine whether or not he is depressed.
Try to do other activities like painting, reading, sport. Or anytime you want to go on the internet go out for a walk or a cycle. Soon the fixation of the computer will fade if you try.
Internet addiction. There is no known cure. The best thing I can recommend is going to find something else to do and stay away from the computer.
for heaven's sake girl, take a walk! Your body is telling you something important and you are not listening. Your body will probably win.
yeah just try to go out and try shopping and looking at stuff. go run or walk in the park...listen to music.try reading a book.catcher in the rye is good and i love nicholas sparks books. so try that....try to do something you enjoy besides going to the internet. if u want u can even disconnect it for while. take the wire out of the computer.
Its a defense mechanism, you addicted to it like a drug. Probably, you are having problems in your own personal life, and are avoiding them by being glued to your computer.
Im not a psyciatrist, so this is just an amateur diagnosis.
Go cold turkey. It's the only way I cut my TV addiction. Get your internet turned off, or otherwise disconnect your computer
because without reading too much into your vainglorious words, i happened to stumble across your last sentence, last word linger. Missy, always be thankful for what you still have, including your little right-index finger. I chopped the tip of my index finger off, for being careless. I knew my great loss at sixteen for i was depressed beyond any words or stable health. I stood on the great-hight wall and slipped by careless wind then fell down to a much more, how shall i say, eternal [hell] its in our heads, don't you see, there are no stars that have human faces in my uni"verse", only an extraordinary vison of untold trust.
You found something to take your mind off your brothers problem now you created just as one bad as his. An addiction, those things will get you down just as much as depression. Try just not to turn the pc on , study , watch tv or go out for fresh air. Finds some friends to talk to . Try talking to your brother. You were worried about him when he was depressed . Tell him about your situation. Best to you.
It's a form of comfort for you, a release that you've trained yourself as a defensive mechanism. Just like exercise, alcohol, work, etc. can be a form of self-medication, so the internet has become this for you. Gradually find something else that can fill this role, like biking or something else productive.
I can think of worse things to be addicted to.
and, if you want to quit...just call the isp and have the service disconnected..
ya, cold turkey the only way
