Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with?

When I was a kid/teen the docs I were given(via insurance)
were rude/cold/just wanted to toss meds at me right off the bat
after one session.
I thought it wasn't fair, it takes me a long time to get over my nervousness meeting new people & spill my guts.

How do/did you find a genuine, creative therapist without wasting time/money on quacks??

Answer:
That is the $6 million dollar question. The best way is by word of mouth because there is no other way to judge the personality/style of a therapist. The problem is most people are pretty closed lipped about seeing a therapist. If you don't know anyone who can recommend a good one, atleast ask when you are looking what "style" of therapy they practice...do you want someone who is bluntly honest or do you need a more warm and cuddly kind of therapy? Atleast that way you have something to go by. Also, you're not a kid anymore, so you can tell them -- no meds if that's what you want. And don't feel alone, anxiety is the #1 mental health problem in the US. (I am a fellow sufferer and was given literature by my therapist years ago). I would have thought depression was #1.
I'd recommend you make it clear that you want to speak with a therapist intinitially. You can always refuse meds. Therapist don't prescribe. It may take a few therapists to find the right chemistry for you. Consider the first session the interview .
