What do you think in sigmund freud's childhood affect in the development of PSychoanlysis?

When i was being taught about Freud at Uni, it was said by my tutor that his research was slanted towards females or something, it was 7 years ago i did my psychology course, but i`m nearly sure his research was said to be to narrow minded as it was based only on a certain group of people.
I cant remember about the slant towards the childhood aspect, but if his work was questioned as being totally valid, then it could be the case of the same applying to his other works etc.
Saying that, i think his works are widely considered valid enough.
Not sure if this hepls, but like most academics views, they are not always right in what they say.
