What is psychological distress and how do you deal with it?

Answer:
Psychological distress can be a number of conditions in such groups as Personality Disorders (Bipolar Disorder & Paranoid Schizophrenia), Anxiety Disorders (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder & Posttraumatic Stress Disorder), Sleep Disorders (Insomnia & Sleep Apnea) and Mood Disorders.

Many treatments include medication, counselling sessions, meditation, hypnotherapy, basically both traditional and alternative therapies. Each situation is as individual as the treatment and each person is assessed as to which treatment is best for them.
Most professionals will opt for the medication combined with counselling or therapy sessions.

Progress can be slow and take time, but this is vital in the recovery period and control of the particular disorder. Over time, people can come off medication or go onto a lower dose, while still wanting to continue some counselling sessions. These things are spoken about at meetings.

What is important to remember, is that words like DISORDER, ANXIETY, MENTAL, ILLNESS, DEPRESSION, MEDICATION or THERAPY, are not words to be afraid of. They aren't bad words or words to be ashamed of. They are simple titles describing your current situation. No more, no less. They do not define you or express who you are, your disorder or illness is simply one factor of your life.

At the end of the day, getting treatment is intended to help you in the here and now, while setting you up to possibly be medication free in the future and deal with life and any obstacles without such aides.
While all cases are different, remember that we all have things going on in our lives that could be perceived as wrong or shameful. Rarely is this the case.

There is nothing wrong with you, and talking openly about yourself and how you are feeling, is one of the more braver things you can do.
