What is interference and why is short term memory particularly vulnerable towards it?

Answer:
Certain short term memories can be lost because of interference from other sensory receptors and memory processors.

Additionally, there are only a set amount of neurons which are set aside for temporary memory retention. If these neurons become saturated with data, memory processes will tend to discard the oldest information which seems least useful. That decision is usually made in the hippocampus.
Interference would be competing information such as visual stimuli and auditory stimuli. You may need to remember some phone number for a short time in order to dial it but then someone else is counting in the background. This is information you do not necessarily need to remember but your short term memory may remember it instead of the number you are looking at.
