Why do children lie?

Answer:
I think it is by nature that we want to avoid punitive repercussions... Children naturally do not want to upset their parents or disappoint. It may even be that they do not know better. However, I think that often times children (people in general) feel that the lie is easier to deal with than the possible discipline that will be potentially doled out. IF parents were more judicious and offered an opportunity for discussion instead of just a blanket of authority, the lies might just cease.
In my case, I knew that it was better to tell on myself than lie to my parents. I knew by opening up an opportunity for discussion, my parents were more likely to listen and help me resolve and less likely to punish regardless of what I may have done.
To escape punishment for being naughty...
they are afraid of the repercussion of their actions by their parents, usually physical punishment. If you mean lying to their parents.

If they lies to their friends, then perhaps they're just being mischievous
Fear of consequences.
And that might be as minimal as your disappointment or upset.
for my own opinion children lie cuz their parents didnt teach them not to lie and sometimes children see it tru der parents so dey taught dat if their parents lie all da time they also think its okey to lie.
children are bad liars...it is actually so easy for us adults to know whether they are telling the truth or not...kids are just truthful little people.so why do they lie?when they do not want to get scolded or caught at something that they are not supposed to say or do...but from experience ,most kids lie because they do not want to tell the truth or unsure of our actions towards them...
To avoid punishment or to prevent others from getting punished (protecting them). Also sometimes to get something they really want, but know they won't get if they would tell the truth.
it's an aversion technique...they are avoiding something, someone or are wanting something...so they lie...if you can't discern the lies from the truth in a child (they aren't good at it) then watch out...adults are much better...they have been practicing since they were children...
