How do you feel about self mutilation?

I'd just like to know what people actually 'think' it is. And why they think people do it.

Answer:
I feel like a lot of people don't understand it. I am a cutter and if someone happens to see my scars by accident I often get looks of disgust, hatred, and confusion. I don't cut myself for any other reason to manage emotions I don't know how to deal with. I openly admit it's not the healthiest action to take, but it works for me. It gives me the instant release I need. And the fact that it is so stigmatized just makes me want to confide in someone and get help even less.
Yep self mutilation's the act of mutilating yourself usually with a sharp instrument to cut into tissue and blood vessels. There are many reason why people do it - some do it for attention, some do it to express their emotional pain etc...
Personally I think it's a waste of blood and time.
Well first of all it's wrong, and not healthy at all. I think most people do it to get attention. A lot of people say it's too "feel something," but I don't think that is true in most cases.

I have a friend who used to do it (before I knew him), and he said he actually started enjoying pain. He enjoyed getting into fights, and just hurting himself. Pain does release some kind of chemical that can cause pleasure (endorphins I think), creating things like a "runner's high". Maybe cutting yourself is bringing it to the next level. Gives me the creeps though, and I don't recommend it.
The only thing I can think of that you're referring to
is when someone hurts themselves--like banging
their forehead, either with their fists or hitting their
head against a wall--when they experience either
an anxiety or a panic attack.
Having suffered from Depression, myself, I can
tell you that I did only as an outlet for my outrage-
ously overwhelming flood of negative emotions,
which simply come with territory
(But, do I think it's wrong for someone to do that?
No. Not at all. The only thing that would make it
all wrong to do would be if the person did not
seek counseling--which I did; and, although my
Depression is now a thing of the past, I still see
a psychologist on a regular basis.)
It's hurting yourself. From what I've read people do it because they can't express emotional pain or other emotions. I believe some people do it for attention. I am the oldest of a big family and I felt neglected growing up. I remember tearing my hair out and then showing my parents bald spots or rubbing insulation material on my arms and giving myself a rash and freaking them out. Now I think the reason I did things like that was that the only time they really seemed concerned about me was when I was "sick."
