Answer:
First, the discipline is not about learning about your own psychological issues, it’s primarily discovering the terms, history and methodology about the discipline. Not until you reach upper division does it divide into research areas of behavioral, industrial, social, etc. The discipline places a lot of emphasis on reading, writing, research, and statistics. You must be academically inclined, to declare it as a major.
It is an interesting topic to study. Be prepared to go to graduate school, though. Some of the courses I took:
