sensory perception is the door to a person's mind. And since the mind react to what it conceive, it is but natural to be stimulated even by words, sounds, scents etc. We remember things because our brain have experienced something with them. With respect to your "odd" things, I think each person have a stimulus which receive a better reaction from the brain than all other. This means we yearn for that factor because our brain asks to experience that feeling again.
Yes, I am a text freak. I enjoy all fonts, different layouts, various languages, and interesting turns of phrase. Voices, scents, and sounds bring to mind creative and titillating fantasies about text.
visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory stimuli are all naturally arousing. not just for humans but for all animals to some degree or another.
as for the "odd things," if i'm understanding you correctly i think you are referring to what we call fetishes. most are harmless and have their origins in early instances of intense arousal. they tend to be individually based hence their appearance of being "odd"
