Does participation in 12 step programs tend to isolate members socially?

Answer:
not in my experience as a drug-counsellor and someone who has written treatment programmes for prisons and day-programs in the community(and an ex-client and occasional user of 'the fellowships')...in fact, i think that socialisation is probably the main benefit of 12-step..watch out for 'minnesota model' stuff though cos it's kinda brutal and has been shown to do more harm than good in quite a few studies now.
Oh, I have a lot to say about 12-step programs, but I'll just say that from my own personal experiences, yes they can hinder you, although it's not necessarily the case for everyone. I have seen very few people become what I would consider to be "healthy" from these programs; those that do don't make meetings the centerpiece of their existence.
