Why do we compare ourselves to others when we feel upset?

Answer:
I think the human race, while very advanced, is still basically instinct driven. When you're upset you revert to this and by comparing yourself with others you can affirm your 'self-image'
i.e when upset you'll often compare yourself to others you believe to be better, confirming what you believe of yourself.
When you're on top of the world you can often compare how great life is for you and this confirms your felings of wellbeing.
Of course, I've been wrong before, lol.
People like to prove they are right by using comparisons. They feel in some way justified.
to prove ourself are the losers and cry and cry, until one day, you find there is a more miserable guys try to survive in any chance, then you start to cheer up. And climb and climb. But you still feel upset, coz there are still guys 10,100 or even million times better than you. Then you will have learnt, we should get rid of it.
i dont because when im looking like i do , nobody wants to look like me!!
Maybe we are looking for some inspiration...
Good question.

Perhaps to try and work out in what way we think someone else is better so we can improve ourselves?

With some folks, it might be that they think of others who are worse off - to try and feel a little better by comparison. I guess some folks compare with people "better off" AND "worse off" to try and work out "where they are at".

Whether it is love, money, work, relationships, bereavement etc.

MUCH more to the point though might be:-

What do YOU think might be making YOU feel the need to compare yourself with others? After all, your reasons might not be the same as mine - or the next answerers :)

i think bc we imagine that others have it better that we do... we focus on the negatives in life & in ourselves.
No idea why we do it, but Shakespeare did it in his Sonnest 29. He was dead miserable.
Because when we feel upset our self esteem is at a low point, therefore we look at others and think that they have it all and we have nothing.sadly this is not the case, as we are all human and all suffer emotionally at times in our lives.
