What is happiness and what is the secret of hapiness?
Answer:
Happiness is generic, and is applied to almost
every kind of enjoyment except that of the animal
appetites. It ia a state of well-being
characterized by emotions ranging from contentment
to intense joy. These include: bliss, joy, joyous,
carefree, jubilant, exultant, cheerful, playful,
amused, fun, glad, gay, gleeful, jolly, jovial,
delighted, euphoric, ecstatic, thrilled, elated,
enraptured, comfortable, harmonious, and
triumphant. Societies, religions, and individuals
have various views on the nature of happiness and
how to pursue it.
Only saint-like persons, who feel that they are no
longer interested in the external world, think
that happiness is within. For many persons,
nothing can make them happy. Our minds are as
different as our finger prints - no two are alike.
Listening to loud music makes one happy and makes
another unhappy. Hence, there can be no single
definition for happiness. It is probably
impossible to objectively define happiness as
humans know and understand it, as internal
experiences are subjective by nature. Because of
this, explaining happiness as experienced by one
individual is as pointless as trying to define the
color green such that a completely color blind
person could understand the experience of seeing
green.
As a state and a subject, it has been pursued and
commented on extensively throughout world history.
"Call no man happy till he is dead." - Aeschylus
"Happiness is a positive cash flow." - Fred Adler
"Many persons have a wrong idea of what
constitutes true happiness. It is not attained
through self-gratification but through fidelity to
a worthy purpose." - Joseph Addison
"True happiness arises, in the first place, from
the enjoyment of one's self, and in the next, from
the friendship and conversation of a few select
companions." - Joseph Addison
Happiness is often associated with the presence of
favourable circumstances such as a supportive
family life, a loving marriage, and economic
stability. Kali Yuga, the age of darkness, is the
time when these favourables are difficult to find.
Unfavorable circumstances - such as abusive
relationships, accidents, loss of employment, and
conflicts - diminish the amount of happiness a
person experiences. In all nations, factors such
as hunger, disease, crime, corruption, and warfare
can decrease happiness. However, according to
several ancient and modern thinkers, happiness is
influenced by the attitude and perspective taken
on such circumstances.
From the observation that fish must become happy
by swimming, and birds must become happy by
flying. Aristotle points to the unique abilities
of man as the route to happiness. Of all the
animals only man can sit and contemplate reality.
Of all the animals only man can develop social
relations to the political level. Thus the
contemplative life of a monk or professor, or the
political life of a military commander or
politician will be the happiest according to their
own psyche.

Further, happiness is not entirely psychological
in nature - it has got a biological basis too. The
neurotransmitter dopamine is involved in desire
and seems often related to pleasure. Pleasure can
be induced artificially with drugs. Use of drugs
is not some thing new, it has been used by many
including Sanyasis since millenia.
Shamelessness is the key to happiness. If you do things that will cause you no shame, and do things with the attitude that you are unashamed, you will be happy... no regrets.

Happiness is a "state of mind" and the secret is to keep your mind at peace. Start ignoring whatever bad is happening to you and be at peace in whatever situation you are in. Remember, whether you are happy or not, it's all in your head!
Happiness is sharing a sandwich with your sister or taking your dog for a walk.
The secret of happiness is to appreciate what you have.
i think its just what u feel ..if u choose misery then thats what u get but if u think happy thoughts it is attracted to u .. u cant be miz if u are always doing or going after things u love it could only make u happy
No clear definition of happiness can be applied. Everyone is different. According to Soren Kierkegaard "Subjectivity is Truth, and Truth is Subjectivity." It means that everyone is different and each person has their own idea as to what happiness is. Furthermore, G.E. Moore describes happiness as undefinable, it is like yellow. Try to explain what yellow is. Without having first seen it, there is no of describing it, the same applies to happiness, until you have experienced it, there is no defining it.
i think the key to happiness is to accept the fact that life is not easy, not fair. once you have accepted that you can face every day with a smile!
Happiness is a high level of satisfaction that peole try to receive by doing things by themselves. Joy is the ultimate level that people need to have. Nobody can take your joy away from you. The world can't give it to you and the world can't take it away. But happiness is just a temporary state that a person receives satisfaction-but only for a little while, because as soon as something happens, that happiness tends to disappear until something good happens again. Happiness is superficial, but joy is real.
True happiness lies not in finding what you desire, but in searching for it.
Happyness is serenity in everything you do. It took me 40 yrs to learn that.
happiness is reality divided by expectations
real pleasure lies in not seeking happiness. can you enjoy the pleasure when you think of the miseries all around including the miseries of other living beings. pleasure lies in your understanding the logic of life and your contribution towards mitigating it. the satisfaction derived in doing this is the real happiness!
For me happiness is :

Happiness = Peace of Mind + Joy in mind. This combination gives a soothing feeling which is happiness Now this is a mental state created by your own mind. Therefore its your own choice.
So the secret is to not to attach it to anything. Dont believe that you will be happy by achieving x, y or Z or by getting the attention of x, y or z. By doing this you are giving up your choice to be happy to the reactions and whims and fancies of others whereas its your own right and your own choice to be happy.
Believe that you are happy today just because you are entitled to be happy today irrespective of whatever be the circumstance. This will teach you to be happy with yourselves whatever you are, wherever you are and thus will give you immense strength.
I agree with Mortician as above.
The good weather of heart is happiness. things which make you happy are depend on your hobbies. like music dance play, singing etc
Happiness is like a butterfly...
The more you chase it, the more it will elude you...
But if you turn your attention to other things...

Don't seek happiness... Happiness will find you!

If our mind is light and the reason for that any incident that is happiness..There is no secret.
The bee has the fullness of its joy in the flowers that bear honey. Man has the fullness of his joy only in that which bears to an absolute degree, and eternally, every quality, every delight, every power his heart longs for, and that is God.
We have no fullness of joy in that which is limited, and that which comes to an end. God, the infinite and absolute Being, Consciousness, Presence, Power, Love, Beauty, alone is unlimited and unending. The greater our consciousness of the Presence of God, in our daily lives, the more intense is the fullness of joy that we derive.
The real happiness in our life is to be measured by the extent and the degree to which we have, in knowledge, in faith, in love, in awareness, established relations with God. Those among us who experience His Presence, and live in tune with His Being and Beauty, are the happiest.
To be in the Presence of God, is to see all things through the unlimited love that God bears, to overcome every difficulty, trial, circumstance, with the dynamic knowledge of God’s omnipotence, and our relations to it and to do all things in the Light of God’s Wisdom and Will. The fullness of joy, power and peace belongs to those who bear the Presence of God in their awareness and experience.
Happy is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Every river that takes refuge in the ocean, acquires the vastness, the grandeur, the majesty, the power of the ocean. A creeper that entwines itself to the tall tree, acquires the conditions essential for the joy of rising into free air, and greater light and warmth. Man is limited in knowledge, power, peace, joy, freedom, life. The moment he takes refuge in God, he acquires the unlimited knowledge, strength, peace, joy, freedom, life.
God is infinitely more to our inner being, than sunshine is to the plants and trees. We need Him, far more than the sailing ships need favourable winds. We are happy, wise, powerful, royal, the moment we take refuge in the indestructible and magnificent Splendour of the timeless, all-powerful, and all-loving God. They that have abandoned their inner separation from God, and have taken refuge in His perfections, own the Empire of Happiness.
Sorrow is not permanent, it passes away. Happiness, which is the essential nature of the life of life in us, of God in us, is permanent; it cannot pass away.
No misery endures; the joy that is derived from contact with the Divine, alone endures. When we turn to God, and know Him, our miseries disappear. They burn out as does the camphor, without leaving any residue or trace behind. The moment we converse with God, our unhappiness evaporates, leaving behind no trace, even as does a drop of water dropped upon a frying pan.
Wisdom puts sorrow on its evanescent grounds, grants us right perspectives, assists us to dispel it, and turns us to the Great Reality, the source of everlasting Happiness.
The secret of happiness is that it lies secretly hidden in the world around us.
