Psychiatry Vs. Psychology?
Thanks.
Answer:
Being someone who has just completed Abnormal Psychology, and used to consider being a psychiatrist, I can tell you that there are four main schools of thought in the field of psychology: psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, and biomedical.
Psychiatrists deal with the biomedical model. This model is essentially prescribing drugs to alleviate symptoms. It tends to work quicker, but has a larger chance of relapse - as the underlying problem doesn't get cured, just the symptoms temporarily.
All schools of thoughts have various treatments for almost all mental disorders (with exception to some like Schizophrenia, which biomedical is the only model that has so far been effective).
Psychiatrists go to medical school to obtain a medical degree in psychiatry. Psychologists go to graduate school to obtain a phd. Normally, but not allows (depends on state), psychiatrists are the only ones who can prescribe medicine. Both psychologists and psychiatrists can treat patients without medicine, but psychologists are normally best at dealing with non-medical treatments (psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioral).
It's also worth noting that, as a doctor prescribing medicine, Psychiatrists normally make more than Psychologists. The median salary for Psychiatrists are normally around 120-150k - underpaid for a medical doctor, but still paid much more than the average person. A psychologist usually makes a median of around 60-65k.
Psychiatry typically treats more serious mental disorders that cannot be alleviated with psychotherapy alone. It involves the use of prescription drugs.
Psychology tries to alleviate maladaptive behavior through various types of psychotherapy, without the use of drugs. It can be used in combination though.
The 1st one they deal with medicine to cure illnesses while 2nd one they work on the patients thoughts to find ways to solve the problem. They can be done together as well.
HI,
A Psychiatrist is a "Drug Pusher", and a Psychologist is
a "Mind Pusher".
Your Welcome.....
Psychiatry = Mental illness. (treats)
Psychology = Emotional Problems. (treats)
a psychiatrist treats mental illness and chemical imbalances, with medication,a psychologist deals with behavioral disorders,by counseling,not allowed to give medication.
the only real tangible differences are:
Psychiatrists hold a medical degree
Psychiatrists can write prescriptions
Psychiatry means you're too ******* crazy to be cured by speaking about your traumas.
Psychology means you can be cured without pills.
