Why does my wife wake up screaming?

My wife wakes up screaming all the time, at least once a night, she says its not nightmares, and she dosent even remember usually, i just wonder why its happening.

Answer:
I would say night terrors. It is much more common in very young children, even before they hit the nightmare stage. It was my first thought to your question, so I did a search for night terrors. And sure enough, some adults have them as well. Hope this helps.
I didn't search the site for any cures, but you might certainly want to.
Good luck to you, and your wife. It must be awful for her.

Night Terrors Symptoms: Sudden awakening from sleep, persistent fear or terror that occurs at night, screaming, sweating, confusion, rapid heart rate, inability to explain what happened, usually no recall of "bad dreams" or nightmares, may have a vague sense of frightening images. Many people see spiders, snakes, animals or people in the room, are unable to fully awake, difficult to comfort, with no memory of the event on awakening the next day.
It could be nightmares that she doesn't remember once she wakes up. If there are loud noises in the house or outside the house it could explain. She should see a doctor and see if her blood pressure is up. Maybe a stress test too. Most likely it is nightmares she does not recall.
because she wants to be comforted and get some of your attention
Because you keep farting under the covers. Try cutting down on beef.
She might have a condition that causes certain involuntary responses, such as sleep apnea. Or it could be nightmares, who knows. She definitely needs to have a thorough examination with a medical doctor and if all the tests for blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, etc. show nothing, then the next step could be counseling which includes hypnosis. I have known diabetics who will have a panic attack during the night when their blood sugar gets out of whack, and they will wake up in a panic. Does your wife have any history of blood sugar irregularity? How about an anxiety disorder with panic attacks? Any number of things could cause this problem, but the best source for finding the answer is your family doctor.
yea it sounds like nighterrors to me, it usally happens about an hour to an hour and a half into sleep (during stage 4) it could be that your wife is suffering from a lot of anxiety which is causing the nighterrors, if its very distrubing to both you and your qife seek help, maybe a psychiatrist who could prescrive antianxiety meds if nighterrors is the source of the problem

also the diffrence between nighterrors and nightmares is that nightmares occur during REM sleep, the same time when we dream so basically they are just a bad dream, and just like dreams we sometimes remember them and sometimes not, nighterrors occur almost nightly during stage 4 of sleep and they are not remebered in the morning
I'm not sure it could be something unconscious and when she wakes up she has no recollection of it, it could be something that she has repressed (I'm no SIGGIE lover, but some of his stuff seems to be ok). Or maybe she really does remember it but doesn't want to share could be a number of things. She could even have PTSD, not sure if anything traumatic has happened and this disturbance has to have been going on for at least month, if it's just started it's really hard to tell if she has PTSD. does she avoid stmuli associated with her dreams? are there problems with her falling asleep ? staying asleep? Irritability/outbursts of anger, difficulty with concentration, hypervigliancy, an exaggerated sartle response? the inabilty ot RECALL information about the vent, theseare concerns associated with PTSD, hope thei alleviates a little of your anxiety, perhaps you could go see a therpist. The treatmenst can either be meds and psychological therpay or a combination of both or just psychotheropy on its own, usually what's kinown as the cover/uncover technique...in that the "covering" aspect helps the client to heal from the trauma, and the "uncovering" part just refers to their facing the traumtic event AFTER they've healed, usually includes behavioral treatments such as imaginal flooding and systematic desensitization. Imaginal flooding refers to the IMMERSION of the feared stimulus, through IMAGINATION.

Systematic desensitization refers to gradually bringing forth anxiety provoking images while in a relaxed state, so the images are brought about gradually. hope this hleps if it is PTSD
could be night terrors. They're more common in children but apparently some people continue to have them into adulthood. My daughter had them and still walks in her sleep. See one link below.
i have sort of the same problem. i never know it but my mom sais that i always cry in my sleep, every night. usually, i dont even remember my dreams, but i dont only cry when i have nightmares. i even cry when i am dreaming about something happy. i really dont know the reason, but i dont think you should be too concerned. good luck
