Fear? What makes us afraid?

I am terrified of spiders, yet i have no idea why, i cant even touch pictures of them and i have nightmares about them, Can you explain why to me please.

Answer:
Did you encounter a bad experience in the past? I hate spiders too. I just think they are nasty. Anything that jumps at you or chases you.
well it could be a mild xenophobia, some people are afraid of them because they're a bug, have 8 legs, and hair (hair is a mostly uniquely mammalian trait so what sort of weird bug thing has hair?!)
fear in and of itself is a powerful and useless survival mechanism... if something is powerful enough to kill you, and the run screaming in the opposite direction, are petrified and don't move or you hide then you're more likely to survive it...

maybe you should desenitise yourself to them... let one harmless spider (like a daddy long legs) take up residence near your ceiling... it'll do it's best to rid the place of any stray fly, won't harm you not even if you harm it lol... and you can slowly become accustomed to it...

just a thought...
maybe it's a phobia! I'm not expert but there are many who will know how to deal with it and to solve the problem
This is a frequent phobia. Humans are biologically prepared to get phobias from things that was dangerous to our ancestors (especially ancestors before humans were born). So insects was dangerous for animals which we are directly root from. It was really helpful for those animals to be afraid of spiders easily, so they had to learn this quick. They who learned this quick, survived, bringing the phobia to humans.

It's way easier to have a phobia of spiders, heights or the dark, than really dangerous things like cars, kitchens or smoking. Nonetheless, the latter kill more people.

You might have a personal story behind your phobia, or you might have learned it from another person or even TV. Many times it's not clear. Good luck finding the reason :)

A story:
One time a girl played with snakes, when her father said she had to go. She carefully lay down the snake in the grass and ran to the car. She didn't pay attention as the door closed, and she squeezed a finger. She cried for some time, and after that she was afraid of snakes. Why? Because it's so easy to be afraid of "objects" which we are biologically prepared for, like snakes, and so hard to develop a phobia for objects which has not been dangerous for our ancestors, like car doors.

One person is known to have died from a spider in the WHOLE WORLD the last 10 years. It was in Australia :)
