Backmasking/Subliminal?
Answer:
I've studied this subject a bit. I'm not so sure about "backmasking" as this seems to be more of a coincidental phenomenon to me than anything else.
It has been proven that subliminal messages can be effective tools in influencing behavior. They can't "force" you to engage in any behavior, but they can create a stronger pull towards a behavior or even a product. There are actually real laws on the books to protect citizens from subliminal messages as they discovered them in magazine/radio/movie advertising in the fifties.
In the last presidential election there was a great example of subliminal advertising in a Bush ad where the word "Rat" flashed on the screen with a picture of the opposing candidate. They clearly use sex in many modern advertisements to make a product seem more appealing. (Sex sells right?)
Everything you see on a daily basis goes in to your brain and stays there on some level.
After reading up on subliminals it is my belief that these messages aren't necessarily the most important or evil thing in the world, but they are certainly intrusive and at the very least deceptive. It is generally not taken seriously at all and even made fun of until you clearly point examples out to people to which they typically respond, "Well why bother to even look for it?" "What does it matter?" I'm not so sure if it does matter, but I doubt millions of dollars would be spent on advertising that includes them if they didn't hold some sort of statistical validity in boosting sales. (And no, I'm not a conspiracy nut with tin foil on my head.)
I became interested in this subject after reading a book called "Subliminal Seduction" by Wilson Brian Key. Check it out sometime. Its a little far fetched in some of its assertions, but its a good place to start researching the subject.
Not really. When I listened to stairway to heaven by led zeppelin (In case you didn't know is very frightening played backwards) I never thought about Satan or anything like that, but then again, you never know what your subconscious mind is thinking...
A subliminal message is a signal or message embedded in another object, designed to pass below the normal limits of perception. These messages are indiscernible by the conscious mind, but allegedly affect the subconscious or deeper mind. Subliminal techniques have occasionally been used in advertising and propaganda; the purpose, effectiveness and frequency of such techniques is debated.
