What motivates a compulsive liar? Why do they forgo the truth and their integrity?

"Had" a friend but after so many lies I've lost respect. Why do they do this...I can't understand why their sense of character, dignty and integrity don't mean more than the constant lies. This person is middle aged, professional. The lies all center around other women and his interactions with them. I can accept the truth but he just can't give it to me.I got to the point I couldn't believe anything he did tell me.

Answer:
personal opinion, they feel that the truth isnt good enough and cannot be accepted to themselves nor society. they feel as if they have to spice everything up just so they can be the center of attention.

i also "had" a friend just like that and i too got to the point where i could not believe a word he told me.
that's just it though. He thinks the lies he tells will some how give him integrity. The truth is in the eye of the beholder. Some people might believe him, others know the truth. It will be difficult for him to realize that truth has more dignity and integrity than his lies.
He is motivated by his own selfish desires and ego.

He lies to you to try to keep you in his life and still maintain relationships with other women.

Sounds like he needs tons of ego stroking.

Run from this man. He is lethal.
I personally believe its an attention-holding ploy on the part of a kind of 'vampire' who thrives on it for some sick inner and secret need.
