Why does the human brain need sleep considering its activity during sleep?
Answer:
Sleep is the downtime our bodies need to heal and rejuvenate. It also refreshes the mind, keeping it at optimum performance levels. Our minds sometimes do problem solving on a sub-conscious level while we sleep.
You may feel okay right now but you had better not drive a car or do anything that requires concentration involving machinery until you get back on your normal schedule. Your present feeling of well-being is false and you will crash sooner or later. Most likely sooner.
Sleep helps your subconscious deal with things. For example, let's say you are consciously ignoring an insult from someone you care about. You dreams can help you process and move on without you dwelling on it.
You might start to hallucinate soon.
Because that's the time when your brain figures out what info is important to keep and what's not.
Actually only half of your brain is "active" during sleep. Dreams occur in the "imaginative" half of our brain. The "rational" half of our brain is actually asleep at this time. This is why you can dream but not process any rational thinking during sleep.
As someone else said, sleep also helps our bodies rejuvinate.
