War: Inevitable or Avoidable?
I am now asking you to agree and explain, or disagree/disprove and explain, please.
(I'm hoping to see some very convincing arguments, as this idea is actually somewhat depressing...)
Answer:
My wife is a psychologist, and her research area is the psychology of war. I think she would say that from an evolutionary standpoint, war is a deep-seated set of behaviors. Even chimpanzees, our nearest primate relatives, engage in "coalitional killing," which means, essentially, war.
This doesn't necessarily mean that warfare will always be with us, but it *does* mean that war is one of the first responses we consider as a species when conflict arises with another group of people. To avoid war, we need to develop a mechanism that makes war a much less attractive option not only for nations, but for people who are powerful enough to engage in warfare at the same level that nations do (people like Osama Bin Laden).
War is in our nature, but we're also a pretty clever species. We may eventually make war so unattractive that no one will risk it.
In short, I think that war is a natural, horrific aspect of our species (inevitable) and possibly one that we can someday restrain ourselves from engaging in (possibly avoidable). Inevitable now, maybe avoidable in the future.
Sadly inevitable. Humans will never stop fighting. There is too much greed, and pride, and selfishness in this world. As much as I would love it if everyone would just leave everyone else alone, it is a non realistic expectation. As long as people still need to have the best, be the best, and own the best there will be war.
I think it's avoidable. We have the ability to think and reason and avoid conflict, because there are always better options. We should have discarded our primal selves a long time ago. I think those who can only solve problems with violence may have mental problems, because at this point the human brain has evolved beyond the need to automatically clobber everything deemed a threat.
If money did not exist in this world
If everything was free
Then war could be avoidable.
"Primal" is a tricky word. I think of primal as instinctive, like an animal that is born and immediately knows how to catch it's food.
A human however, isn't born knowing how to do things. If they are abused, if they are neglected, if they grew up in a bad environment, then they Learn to fight. I think it's a learned behavior, not embedded.
So war depends on our environment. If we created a peaceful environment for everyone, where life's essential needs are met, then war could be avoidable.
i believe war is avoidable, though it's a lot easier to kill the opposition than try to reason with them. in order to avoid war, you must open your mind and practice tolerance, which both seem very rare.
that being said, i think that war has done good things for our society. our technology and way of life has improved greatly as a result of war. synthetic fibers, commercial airplanes, spread of international food (like italian, yummy) are all positive outcomes directly resulting from war. if we didn't suffer from the necessity of war, then we would be where we are. you see, to survive one must be the fittest, which means more toys in war. these "toys" will then be modified to be used in civilian life.
now, was it worth to lose all those lives so we can wear acrylic sweaters and nylon stockings? that up to personal interpretation...
I believe that every war in human history was avoidable, and that each new conflict we face is also avoidable. However I do think it is inevitable that eventually someone will either care too much or care too little--or just flat out fail to communicate and negotiate--that war will result. Every war is started by ignorance, either by you refusing to see from the other person's perspective, or it is a retaliation against someone who fails to see your perspective.
War can be averted if people were willing to sit down and talk things out, but unfortunately some people live their lives for themselves and themselves alone. They disregard the needs, desires, or wishes of other people and put their own ambitions first. When two or more countries (or leaders of countries) do this, war results.
Interesting your thoughts.. I don't agree though.. war is avoidable...People will always have a more than one choice. In ANY situation. It's their cruelty, pride and stupidity that will keep them from choosing the right one
there will unfortunately always be the haves and the have nots, the have nots want what the haves have and the haves will always control the have nots and put them to work
