Call the police and tell them. That is really the best way to get some kind of protection. Call and call 9 11 next time someone knocks and you don't know who it is. But Call the police immediately. Don't wait for something bad to happen to one or both of you.

As for the other defence measures, you can always make good use of them.
pepper, chilly powder, boiling water / oil. sprays. Deodrants. water etc.
you can be afraid if you have enemies, you can be afraid if you are rich and keeping valuables at home. if you are not belonging to these categories, you can spend peaceful night.

Go to the police, if you have seen the guy standing at the door, you must have gotten a description of the guy. Tell the police and also tell them what your family and friends say. I would suggest you don't wait too long before going to the police. Get a big dog is another suggestion or a dog that barks real good and growls.
Install a silent alarm or even an alarm that will scare him off when he comes back to your door.

leave a baseball bat, a pipe, or anything like that by the door and by your bed, use it if u got 2. Walk outside with it sometimes and show him if he fu(ks with you he will pay the price. oh you may want to call the cops 2, so if something does go down (aka you beat the fu(k outta him for trying to break in or something) they will all ready know that their was a problem with this person and it was all self defense on your side.
The obvious answer is call the police if you feel that scared. When you look through the peep hole, write down how he looks like (hair color, eye color, clothes, height, weight, ethnicity). For me though, I would not want to be alone because of that. Make it sound like there are a lot of people in the apartment. Put the TV or radio up and hopefully it'll scare the guy away. Get a tape recorder. Visit a friend with a big dog. Next time there is a knock, play it and then ask the guy what he wants without opening the door.
Keep in mind that bad people do not knock and say "hi, I want to rape you." They break down the door or break into a window. In bad areas they have bars outside the windows. But if he is bad how hard would it be to break in through a window? You can do it.
If knocking on a door is a crime, then they should lock up you and your mother. A president of the USA said "we have nothing to fear but fear itself." You have a flame thrower. I did this as a kid. Light a lighter and then spray hair spray across it and you will have a flaming spray of fire.
You need to notify the police NOW.
tell the police... talk to your neighbors about it and inquire if they have the same experience... and prepare your phone, mobile to be better... also provide double lock for your door and if the person comes again talk to him through a locked window with your hand on your phone ready to send a call in case of emergency... don't show the phone... also put ready arm at strategic locations in your house not visible to any visitors or strangers but at lest you know where to pick up in case of break-in emergencies and help is still on-call...also, stay calm no matter what... if that guy is psychologically derailed, last thing you should do is to show fear...
make a incident report to the cops and ask your family and friends to describe the guy that's been watching and if he has a car a license number will help the cops to track the perpetrator and for havens sake get a alarm at home depot
Such situation requires serious attention from everyone of you, even your neighbors. I mean, the first thing I'll do if I were you is to call for police to have frequent spotchecks on the area where the mysterious knocker appears. Hope this will end your predicament.
