Are you whole? If so, how did you know you were?

Answer:
You can only tell if you are whole by the feedback from others. We are social beings who live in community and it is only when we relate with others that we are able to tell how we are as humans. Psychologists may say that once you have reached the various levels of maturity, both physically emotionally and mentally, and have made a substantial effort at self-actualization, then you are whole. The environmentalists will direct you to attaining peace with yourself and the environment in order to experience wholeness. While the religious will point you toward the spiritual life as being necessary, in collaboration with a balance in the holistic person (taking into account the intellectual aspect of the person as well). The list could go on and on based on the many disciplines that we have available.

I say that we are the best judges as to whether we are whole or not, however, not without the approval of our fellow human beings. We, of course, cannot be whole unless we accept our weaknesses and our shortcomings. We must accept our strengths and our weaknesses as well as our finitude. Wholeness also demands that we live according to who we are as human beings subscribing to the norms and values that are characteristically human. When we have accepted that we are only whole if we can live in communion with each other, we have indeed achieved wholeness, as long as wholeness is not equated with perfection.
I know I am whole because I feel no gaps or spaces...I have nothing missing and therefore am complete.
